Lord Shiva [Shiva Lingam] Suyambhu represents, per Hindu Religion and Mythology, something which is self made, not artificial, which exists on its own.  The Hindu Religion boasts of a number of gods, of  which  the "TriMurthi's"  representing the functions of  Creation (Lord Brahma), Protection (Lord Vishnu) and Destruction (Lord Shiva) are most popular.

There are numerous temples in India dedicated to the worship of  Lord Shiva and forms part of the Saivist tradition (the cult worshipping Lord Shiva).  In these temples, Lord Shiva is represented through various forms of which the most popular ones are as  Lingam as shown on the left and Lord Nataraja (the cosmic dancer).

The Lingam represents the human physiology and relates to both shiva and shakthi (the female/mother goddess).  The scriptures say that all the forms in the world are generated from the formless Lingam.  Although Lingam  is manifested as a symbol of Lord Shiva, it consists of three parts representing the "TriMurthi's", with the top portion signifying Lord Shiva, middle- Lord Vishnu and bottom- Lord Brahma.

While many of the Lingams are sculpted, there are numerous temples in India, 68 sthalams (religious places), where the Lingams are suyambhus, indicating that the idols are not man made but made by nature.  Suyambhu does not refer only to the manifestation of Lord Shiva in the form of Lingams, but other gods also which are located in certain temples.  However the concept of suyambhu is more predominant in the saivist tradition.

We have gone for the name "suyambhu.com" to reflect a combination of tradition and modernity, something natural and existing in real form to something artificial and present virtually.  The name emphasises our spirit and indicates that we are bound to our roots.
